Do's:

Diet control as advised by your doctor.
Exercise as recommended by your doctor.
Maintain good hygiene
Take medicines / insulin regularly.
Get your blood sugar checked regularly.
Be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia and its management.
Do meditation - maintain calmness of the mind.
Take bath daily.
Take care of your eyes and foot.
Use wheat, ragi, and old rice for preparing your food.
You can have horse gram, bitter gourd, cauliflower, cuisines, radish, cucumber, potato, leafy vegetables, hingu, sarshapa, jeeraka, methika, and buttermilk in your food.
You can take jambu, gawjava fruits, gooseberries, badam, acrot, cashew nut, and pista.
Carry your diabetes identification card and your doctor's
telephone number with you always.

Don'ts:

Avoid sugar items (sweets), milk, curds, butter, ghee, and ice creams.
Avoid spicy, oily, fried, non-vegetarian foods.
Do not smoke
Do not take alcohol.
Do not gain weight
Avoid day sleep
Avoid worries, tension, anger
Do not be idle
Avoid fruits like banana, grapes, mango, orange, jackfruit, and apple.
Never go barefoot.
Never cut corns or calluses.

Research has repeatedly shown that regular physical activity helps reduce the likelihood of having a heart attack or a stroke, aids in weight loss, and improves mood.

Stressing on a formal system for your inward indents conveys the message that you have a no-nonsense approach to purchases and will not be short-changed easily. 






Follow the text: Make it a habit to consult as many texts as possible about your herbs or formulations: Classical books, Pharmacopoeial documents, and new research papers. They contain a treasure of information about product characteristics from morphology to tests helpful in ensuring the purity and integrity of your raw material. An informed customer is always a smarter customer. Say No to Grade-Two: Many suppliers of raw herbs offer what is called 'Grade-Two'. Similarly, many herbal extract manufacturers offer the more economical 'Ratio Extracts'. This is where you should smell the rat. Such Grade-Twos are usually mixed varieties or plain adulterated herbs targeted at the unsuspecting purchase manager looking for a bargain. Similarly, ratio extracts are a big farce, invariably diluted to a consistency even weaker than the original herb. Ask your supplier for the best quality. Stress on sampling: Do not hesitate to ask for samples from various suppliers. Benchmark and compare them before making a purchase. Every member of your team should be aware of this policy and abide by it. By consciously and wisely focussing on buying genuine inputs, we not only do a great service to OUR customers, but also to ourselves. HERB OF THE MONTH: GARCINIA CAMBOGIA 
Garrcinia a tropical species of Garcinia native to India, Srilanka, Myanmar, and Indonesia. The common name is Vrukshmala or Kokum. This fruit looks like a small pumpkin and is green to pale yellow in color but when the rinds are dried and cured in preparation for storage and extraction, they are dark brown or black in color. The dried rind of Garcinia cambogia / Indica is used as a condiment or flavoring curries in Kerala. In Sri Lanka, the fruits are picked under-ripe, the thick pericarp cut into sections. It is used along with salt in the curing of fish. It is rich in acids and possesses marked antiseptic properties. The dried rind is also used for polishing gold and silver and as a substitute for acetic and formic acids in the coagulation of latex. Garcinia also contains significant amounts of Vitamin C and has been used as a heart tonic. 

Phytochemical Constituents: The chemical constituent present in Garcinia is ( - ) Hydroxy-citric Acid, (- ) Hydroxy citric acid lactone – 20-30%, garcinol, isogarcinol, and cyanidin -3- sambubioside, pectins, and sugars. 

Ayurvedic Formulation: Vyosaadi Gutika, Bhaskara Lavan Churana. 

Therapeutic Properties: Extensively used for obesity- weight management, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, dysentery & flatulent colic, edema, and chronic alcoholism. Also used as an astringent, hepatic stimulant. Leaves and seeds are emetic, purgative and hydrogogue. 

Recent research: Hypolipemic effect of Garcinia cambogia in obese women (2014, Vasques CA, Schneider R, Klein-Júnior LC, Falavigna A, Piazza I, Rossetto S.) Garcinia cambogia seems to promote weight reduction and improvement on lipid profile by its major compound, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), blocking ATP-citrate lyase, potentially inhibiting lipogenesis. Furthermore, it is suggested that its extract is able to change the adipokine levels. 


OBESITY 
Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have a negative effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her height. Obesity increases the risk of diseases and health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

ADULTERY OF ADULTERATION 
the ghost of adulteration has haunted the herbal drugs industry for ages. As early as 1820, Fredrich Accum published a book A Treatise on Adulterations; proof of how long adulteration has been recognized as a serious problem. And while the practice is not new, ironically the techniques continue to evolve and spread, engulfing everyone from cultivators to extractors to end-users. With the perpetrators getting bolder and meaner, we the industry have been doing the ostrich act: burying our heads in the sand and pretending the storm will never strike. 

At Botanosys, in a recent interview for a Production Executive, an overtly ambitious candidate shared with me his secret 'technology' to make cheaper Boswellia extract: lace the direct extract with Citric Acid to spike up the Boswellic Acid assay in conventional tests. (An overdose of Citric Acid can cause fainting, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps and other health problems). I was left aghast. The sheer audacity of a 20-something boy in suggesting malpractice to a prospective boss highlighted how deeply the rot had pervaded what was once the backbone of India's health care system. The effect: today Ayurveda and Herbals are scoffed at, or at best ignored as a form of alternate therapy practiced mostly by quacks. While there may be a number of reasons for this, adulterated herbal inputs with poor efficacy sit on top of the list. 

Look-alike herbs are frequently adulterated: Pepper with Papaya seeds, Asoka bark with Polyathia bark, Holy basil with wild basil, Guggul gum with synthetic resin, Shilajit with industrial wax, Catechu with Prosopis gum.....not only that, now Herbal Extracts too are doctored: Gokhru extract is laced into the much more expensive Safed Musli and Satavari extracts to spike the Saponin content, Triphala extract which should be derived from an equal combination of Harad, Baheda and Amla is predominantly made from Baheda as Amla fruit is thrice as expensive, Boswellic acids are spiked with Citric Acid, Protodioscin from Fenugreek seeds is sold as Tribulus extract, Ashwagandha root extract is mostly extract derived from the aerial parts(not root) of the Ashwagandha bush and Turmeric extract is composed of synthetic Curcumin. the list is endless as it is appalling.

According to Ayurveda texts, our body is crisscrossed by srotas or channels or tube-like structures. This network contains both microscopic and macroscopic channels. ( Digestive system, nervous system, circulatory system, etc are few examples of these channels). An innumerable physiological process like breathing, blood circulation, secretions of enzymes, hormones, etc, the flow of signals, the supply of nutrients, filtration of toxins, excretion of waste, etc is aided by these tubular structures.

Diseases occur when toxins get accumulated in the body and clog these channels. Unhealthy diet, lifestyle, stress, changes in the environment, etc lead to accumulation of toxins in the body. These accumulated toxins have to be expelled out in order to keep our body healthy. Through panchakarma therapy, these toxic clogs are removed to normalize the physiological process. Hence panchakarma therapy is called detoxification therapy. Panchakarma therapy can be administered to a normal person to prevent diseases and keep his body healthy. The ideal season to expel toxins through this therapy is the rainy season. 






Panchakarma therapy is also used as a purificatory therapy to cleanse the body before starting a treatment. A diseased body can be compared to a soiled cloth which cannot be colored as we desire. Hence to attain the maximum benefits, the body has to be purified or cleaned before starting the treatment. The cleared channels help medicines to penetrate the deeper tissues. 

The detoxification process contains three steps 
1. Purvakarma - Preparations which have to be done before the detoxification 
2. Pradhanakarma - The main detoxifying process 
3. Pashchat karma - Rehabilitating the diet and lifestyle after the detoxification process. 

Purvakarma : These steps are adapted to soften the channels and toxins so that the toxins can get detached and eliminated easily during the main detoxifying process. The hard toxic clogs are made to get loosened by increasing body fire or agni. Medicines are administered internally for this purpose. This process is called as "deepana and pachana" in Ayurveda. ( the duration of this process is 3-5 days depending on the conditions and diseases) Later whole body is oleated internally and externally with medicated oil or ghee. This process is called as "Snehana". 

Internal oleation is done by administering small quantities of medicated oil or ghee internally. The duration of internal oleation , quantity, and type of medicated oil or ghee is determined by the physician after analyzing the body constitution of the patient. The patient has to eat liquid food or light food on the day prior to internal oleation. After consuming the medicated oil or ghee the patient is encouraged to sip warm water frequently. When medicated oil or ghee is completely digested, the patient is advised to consume light food. 

External oleation is done after the completion of internal oleation. The whole body or body part is massaged with medicated oil. Few types of external oleation are used as treatment methods. They are 

1. Abhyanga ; Massaging the whole body 
2. Lepa - Smearing medicated oil and herbs 
3. Mardana - Kneading the body parts with fingers and fists. 
4. Padaghata - Tampling the body with the foot. 
5. Gandusha - The mouth is filled with oil and is retained for a longer period of time. 
6. Parisheka (Pizhichil ) - The warm medicated oil is poured continuously over the entire body for an extended period of time. 

Soon after oil massage, the body or body part is exposed to heat through a steam bath or other heating methods according to the physician's choice. This process of exposing the body to heat is called as swedana or sweating. Both snehana and Sweden help to soften the channels and toxin clogs. Elimination of toxins becomes easy when channels are soft and toxins are loose. 

Pradhana Karma: This is the main detoxifying process. The softened and loosened toxins are expelled from the body by five methods. Considering these five major detoxifying methods the whole process is named as "Panchakarma" (Pancha = 5, Karma = process ).
1. Vamana (through Emesis), 
2. Virechana (Purgation), 
3. Niruha basthi Basthi (enema with herbal concoctions ), 
4. Anuvasana basthi (enema with medicated oil) 
5. Nasya (nasal drops) and Raktamokshana (Bloodletting). 

(These processes will be explained in detail in next issue ). A physician can choose any of these detoxifying methods according to disease and prevalence of doshas. 

Paschat Karma: A strict diet and lifestyle procedure has to be followed throughout Panchakarma treatment. The rehabilitative procedures to bring back the diet and lifestyle to normal are considered as "paschal Karma". In this stage, the digestion power is brought back to normalcy. Medicines are administered to rejuvenate the body or to treat disease. During panchakarma treatment, the following rules have to be strictly followed. 

1. One has to use only warm water to drink, bathe and for other activities. 
2. A person who is undergoing panchakarma therapy can not indulge in sex. 
3. Sleeping in the daytime is contraindicated. 
4. Natural urges should not be controlled. 
5. Exposures to extreme temperatures or weather conditions have to be avoided. 
6. Keeping awake at night is not advisable 
7. Foods which cause indigestion cannot be consumed. 
8. Exercise and mental stress have to be avoided. 

The Panchakarma therapy is not advisable for persons in whom the following conditions exist. 

* Menses 
* Lactation 
* Cancer of the Lungs or Testicles 
* Melanoma 
* HIV or AIDS 
* Extreme Obesity 
* lymphosarcoma 
* Hypertension 
* Congestive Heart Failure 
* Emaciation 
* Any Active Infectious Disease 
* Pregnancy 
* Angina Pectoris

DO's 
  • 1. The first precaution to take is that piles (hemorrhoids) patient are to prevent constipation and straining.
  • 2. Take adequate fiber in the diet. Fresh fruit, raw and cooked vegetables, whole grain slices of bread and cereals, prunes, raisins, popcorn, figs, pears, and beans are rich sources of fiber.
  • 3. Please see the fiber content in diet is abundant in quantity, gradually, as sudden Increase in fiber intake can cause diarrhea as well as pain in the stomach.
  • 4. Try fiber supplements (as advised by the doctor) which will keep the stool soft and regular.
  • 5. Drink plenty of fluids (at least 8-10 glasses of water daily)
  • 6. Reduce the intake of coffee, tea, and spicy food as they may act as irritants and cause; pain during a bowel movement. Lose weight, if you are overweight.
  • 7. Exercise regularly as it helps to improve blood circulation as well as keep the extra calories off.
  • 8. Train yourself for a regular bowel movement.
  • 9. Use stool softeners, which may help in softening the stools.
  • 10. If suffering from a cough or sneezing bouts (they too tend to increase the intra-abdominal pressure) get immediate treatment from the doctor.





DON’Ts

  • 1. Do not ignore an urge for a bowel movement.
  • 2. Avoid excessive straining at stool.
  • 3. Do not sit in the toilet for long periods.
  • 4. Do not use laxative regularly, as it may become a habit and cause the bowel to lose its the ability to function normally.
  • 5. Avoid lifting heavy objects. Even if you lift anything heavy, exhale and do not hold your breath.
  • 6. Avoid sitting for long periods as this can exert pressure in the anal area and aggravate the problems of piles (hemorrhoids). Even if your job requires continuous sitting, take short breaks in between and walk around for some time. This will ease the pressure in the anal area.

EATING FRUIT.

We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think.
It's important to know how and when to eat.

DON'T EAT FRUIT AFTER MEALS!
FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

It will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.

FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD. Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so.
In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.

Eat fruit on an empty stomach or before meals! People complain, "Every time I eat watermelon I burp; when I eat apples, my stomach bloats up; when I eat a banana🍌 I feel like running to the toilet, etc " This will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. Fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas, hence you will bloat!
Gray hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under eyes will NOT happen by taking fruit on an empty stomach.

There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon 🍋are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. Master the correct way of eating fruits, and you will  have beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight.

Drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans. Don't even drink juice that has been heated up. Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. Cooking destroys all the vitamins.

Eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look!

Drinking Cold water after meals = Cancer!

Better to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

CURD:- Coagulated milk; used to make cheese

     Food and lifestyle routines are considered the most important medicine. According to Ayurveda food is medicine and medicine is food. Eating correctly is very important and the sense of taste is a natural guide map towards proper nutrition. Curd is used since ages to gain its nutritional health benefits.

     Curd is widely used and no Indian meal is complete without a cup of curd. Ayurveda, the Indian system of medicine explains the benefits of curd based on different types of curds. These types are explained as per the taste and method of production. If used wisely curds can be an excellent Ayurveda's home remedy for many health conditions. In this article we will see about the different types of curd and its qualities.

PROPERTIES OF CURD IN GENERAL:-Curd is unctuous, heavy, and hot in potency. It has little astringent taste and it is sour at the end of digestion, binds feces, increases pitta, kapha (fat) and oedema. It is good for dysuria, rhinitis, and intermittent fevers with chills, diarrhoea, anorexia and emaciation. It increases strength and sperm count.

TYPES OF CURD ACCORDING TO BHAVA PRAKASHA:-The 5 types of curd as mentioned in Bhava Prakasha Nigantu are Manda (Semi formed and thick curd), Swadu (Sweet and thick curd), Swadamla (Sweet – sour curd), Amla (Sour curd) and Atyamla (Excessively sour curd). Their properties are as follows.

Semi formed and thick curd:- The curd which is not well formed and has no distinct taste is semi formed curd. It increases the production of urine and feces, increases tridoshas and causes burning sensation. It is generally not suitable.

Sweet and thick curd:- The curd which is formed properly and which is sweet in taste is Sweet curd. It is an aphrodisiac, increases fat and kapha whereas mitigates vata and is good for bleeding disorders.

Sweet:- Sour curd  – The curd which is sweet and little sour in taste increases appetite and increases pitta and kapha. It also increases disorders of blood.

Sour curd:- This is the curd which is properly formed but sour in taste. This curd increases pitta dosha, kapha dosha and blood.

Excessively sour curd – The curd which is excessively sour when consumed produces tingling sensation in teeth and burning sensation in throat. This promotes appetite and increases vata, pitta and disorders of blood.

PROPERTIES OF CURD DEPENDING UPON SOURCES:-Curd from Cow's milk – It is sweet and sour in taste. It promotes taste, increases appetite, strength and good for heart. It mitigates vata and is the best among all type of curds.

Curd prepared from Buffaloes' milk:- It is unctuous, heavy to digest and mitigates vata and pitta but increases kapha and vitiates the blood. It is an aphrodisiac.

Curd from Goat's milk:- It is best and light to digest and bind feces.It helps in overcoming breathing disorders, cold, cough, hemorrhoids, and emaciation and also mitigates the tridoshas.

Curd prepared from fat free milk:- It is unctuous and heavy. It promotes strength, stoutness and taste. Mitigates vata and increases kapha. When it is added with sugar or honey, it does not increase pitta.

PROPERTIES OF SWEET CURD:-  When sugar or jaggery is added to curd and taken, it relieves thirst, improves blood circulation, mitigates vata and pitta, increases sperm count and is good for health.

CONTRA INDICATIONS OF EATING CURD DURING NIGHT TIME:-Ayurveda explains curd as having sour mixed sweet property and it increase Kapha dosha in the body. The mucus generation is also attributed to the effect of Kapha. During night period, there is natural predominance of Kapha in the body. So, curd consumption at night will further increase kapha leading to many complications. When curd is taken at night for longer period of time it may cause problems like fever, cold, anaemia, jaundice, herpes, skin disorders and giddiness.

EFFECT OF INTAKE OF CURD ACCORDING TO SEASONS:- It is best to take curd during cold and dewy season, in winter or in rainy season. It is to be avoided during autumn, summer and spring seasons. In autumn, summer and spring seasons, buttermilk is good to be taken.

PREPARATION OF BUTTERMILK:- To prepare buttermilk, add one scoop of curd and 4 times of water. Churn it well and remove the fat, then add little salt to taste. You can add little crushed cumin also.

REFRESHING CURD RICE RECIPE:-Ingredients: 1 cup boiled Rice, 2 cups of plain curd, 2 tbsp. Oil, finely chopped coriander leaves, 1-2 green chilies, 1 tsp. chickpea, 1 tsp. split black gram, 1 tsp. mustard seeds, 1 1/2 tsp. finely chopped ginger and 1/2 tsp. salt.

Procedure:- In a saucepan heat 2 tsp. of oil and add mustard seeds to the oil. When the mustard seeds start popping add chickpea and split black gram. After a minute, add ginger, coriander and green chilies and saute them for a minute. Remove from fire. Mix salt. Just before serving, mix well all the ingredients with curd and add rice. Curd rice is ready to be served.
